x3d and color-depth under Linux

We are using root under Debian Linux kernel 2.0.27-29 and xfree86.
The "shape" demo works under 8-bit color-depth but not under 16-bit.
When x3d is started under the 16-bit color-depth, root simple exits.
Is this a root problem? I.e. Would x3d work under color-depth more than 8?
