SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION

A tentative program of the Workshop is enclosed in the latter part of the present circular.
All sessions have been decided to be plenary by the committee. Every participant, therefore, can join all sessions. This is a philosophy of the HELION97, from Quark to Life, that science should always be universal beyond the barrier of each field.

Oral Presentation:

For oral presentations, two overhead projectors, can be used simultaneously. A slide projector is also available, while a video display is not. Every view graph should be prepared using adequate size of letters and figures in colors distinctly visible.
If you prefer poster presentation(s) rather than oral ones, please inform us as soon as possible. The location of the poster presentation might also be prepared.

PROCEEDINGS

The Workshop proceedings, including the invited talks, and contributions presented both orally and on posters, will be published as a special issue of the Nuclear Instruments and Methods (Elsevier Science B.V., the Netherlands) after reviewed by referee(s) we ask. Therefore, each manuscript should be original and carefully prepared with refined English avoiding illogical, unnecessary expressions. A copy of the proceedings will be mailed to each registered participant as early as possible after publication.
All the invited and oral speakers (and poster-presenters) are asked to submit manuscripts no later than the last day of the Workshop (Jan. 24, 1997). An instruction document for the manuscript preparation will soon be announced by another forthcoming e-mail.

Weather:
Winter in Kobe is not so cold. The temperature is usually 5-10 degree day time and 0-5 degreeat night. Snow is unlikely during January.

Currency:
The Japanese Yen is only the accepted currency. Money exchange can be done at banks at the airport. Major foreign currencies are also exchangeable at banks in the town. Major credit cards and traveller's checks are acceptable in the major shops, department stores, and restaurants.

Tip:
Since tips are usually included in the bill as a service charge sometimes, you do not worry about tips.

Electricity:
The standard electric power is 100 V A.C. with 60 Hz in the western part of Japan including Osaka/Kobe region. Be careful, however, that the frequency changes to 50 Hz when you visit the eastern part of Japan, e.g. Tokyo.

Miscellaneous:
The town of Kobe had been developed as one of the ports open for foreign countries since 130 years ago. Therefore, a lot of foreign people coming from Asia, America, Australia, and Europe are living in and are making the town an international atmosphere.
However, as you probably remember, Kobe was attacked by the fatal earthquake almost 2 years ago. All the life-lines including electricity, gas- and water-system, railroads, and highways were almost completely destroyed. You will, however, find that the city could considerably recover by the patient efforts. A part of this recover owes, of course, to warm help from foreign countries. We are very proud that we could recover our city in such a short period. The government of Hyogo prefecture where Kobe is involved named her recovery project, "PHOENIX plan". In a similar way that a phoenix is born out of the fire which burned herself, Kobe will hopefully be born again from the ash.
