The 7th RCNP INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP on
Polarized 3He Beams and Gas Targets and Their Application
20-24 January 1997, International Conference Center, Kobe
First Announcement
We organize the 7th RCNP International Workshop on Polarized 3He Beams and
Gas Targets and Their Application to be held at the International Conference
Center in Kobe from 20 to 24 January 1997. Since the first workshop on this
subject at Princeton University in 1984, significant development has been made
in producing polarized 3He beams and gaseous targets owing to earnest
requirements from particle physics and rapid progress in the laser technology.
As a result, a number of experiments with a polarized 3He gas have been
performed or are planned throughout the world for fundamental researches
particularly on the nucleon spin structure, verification of the Standard Model
by the symmetry breaking tests, and so on.
In RCNP as well, a novel type of a polarized 3He ion source based on
optical pumping is developed toward high intensity and high polarization.
This ion source will in near future be used for spin physics at an
intermediate energy region.
Meanwhile, increasing attention is paid on the application of the polarized
3He nucleus to other fields, for example, the medical technology and the
nuclear fusion problem. In particular, since the minable 3He gas was
discovered on the lunar surface in 1986, the 3He-D fueled reactor has been
regarded as one of the most promising fusion reactors in the coming century.
From expectation that the fusion cross-section may be enhanced with the
polarized 3He nucleus and the polarized deuteron, efficient ways to produce
polarize 3He nuclei have rigorously been investigated.
Under these circumstances, it is timely to get together to discuss not only
the polarization technology but topical physics involving atomic, nuclear and
particle physics with the 3He beams and gaseous targets from both experimental
and theoretical sides. Much time will also be spent on the production of
polarized heavier nuclei and their application to the fusion problem,
astrophysics, medicine, and so on.
This workshop will consist of a plenary session, and a poster session.
In the plenary session, invited talks and oral talks selected from the
contributed papers will be presented. In the poster session, detailed
discussions by attendants may be possible. We publish the materials presented
in the conference in the form of Proceedings.
We also plan to make a tour to the RCNP, Osaka University or the SPring-8,
which is an SOR facility equipped with an 8 GeV electron storage ring.

proceedings, the banquet, and a tour to either RCNP or SPring-8.
Proceedings:
We plan to publish proceedings of the workshop.
Workshop site and accommodation:
The workshop will be held at the International Conference Center in Kobe.
We arrange accommodations at the hotel Pearl City Kobe in the neighbourhood of
the workshop site. The cost is about 7,500 Yen/day including breakfast.
A limited number of rooms will be available at the lodging house of
the RCNP, Osaka University which is located about 50 km apart from the workshop
site. The cost is about 1,000 Yen/day and no breakfast service is available.
The access time from the RCNP lodging house to the workshop site in Kobe is
approximately 1.5 hours via the public transportation service (the travel cost is
about 500 Yen/one way.)
