International Student from Hong Kong. My research focuses on ECR ion source and cyclotron. ECR ion source is a device that produce ion beam using Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) phenomenon. For its capability of producing high charge state ion beams, ECR ion source is widely used for nuclear physics research, medical and industrial applications. I love the joke saying that “EBIS engineers at least understand why their source performs poorly, whereas the poor ECRIS people don’t even understand why the ECRIS performs so well.” In spite of being a device made by mankind, with all its nonlinear phenomena, many principles inside ECR ion source remains unknown, and that is what makes researches on ECR ion source interesting.
An ion beam produced by a ECR ion source will then be accelerated by a cyclotron. I am now working on a compact cyclotron with high reliability and low power consumption, by using high temperature superconducting material. By avoiding the nonlinear effects that would arise in a traditional cyclotron, I am trying to build a easy-to-use compact cyclotron, a cyclotron that doesn’t require any accelerator expert for operation. I hope to widen the scope of application of accelerator technology through this research.
