Summary

• To use devices at RCNP's network you must first register them into Network Management System.

• With the Network Management System you can do following.
  
  

  Manage devices	Add, modify and remove devices connected to RCNP's network.
  Locate devices	Locate devices connected to the RCNP's network.
  Register visitors	Register devices for short time visitors and guests.
  Manage visitors	Lookup visitors, suspend usage rights and expire usage rights.
  Software management	Shows installed softwares on the registered devices.

  
  
• To register a device you need to know the information listed below.
  • Hostname you wish to use
  • MAC address
  • Operator (user of the device)
  • Administrator (Supervisor of the user)
  • Model number (Name/model of the device)

• More details about the information you need for the registration
  • Hostname you wish to use
    Name that will be attached to the device you are connecting to the network.
    You can only use lower case characters (romanji), numbers and hyphens.
    If you are registering additional interface to the device also include interface name. (e.g. wifi, LAN)
    
  • MAC address
    Unique string of characters and numbers which every network interface has.

  • Operator (user of the device)
    Owner or the one in charge of the registered device.
    The person who sets up the PC settings and installs the used software.
    Person who becomes the operator must have account at RCNP.
    Both operator and administrator can register, modify, delete and do other operations to the devices.
    
  • Administrator (Supervisor of the user)
    Supervisor who understands for what purpose the operator will use the network.
    Has account at RCNP and is one of the following at RCNP professor, associate professor, lecturer, assistant teacher, researcher, technical staff or administrative staff, and is employed by full-time.
    Both operator and administrator can register, modify, delete and do other operations to the devices.
    
  • Model number (Name/model of the device)
    Please give the following. Device maker, model name and model number/serial number.

• Important points regarding hostname

  Until now the device management was done by attaching hostname to each NIC(network interface card) unit.
  When doing it this way the management didn't know if several interfaces belonged to a single computer.
  When managing software licenses, solving security problems and etc. it's extremely important to be able to clearly identify devices.
  The new Network Management System supports concepts of both device and NIC. 1 device can have multiple interfaces kind of situation can now be managed.
  Because of that the management of the devices names has become little bit more complicated.
  Read the text below carefully to ensure you register your devices correctly.

  • One device having multiple interfaces is administrated.
  • Each device has hostname attached.
  • Each additional NIC(Network interface controller)/interface has name attached.
  • In the Network Management System the interfaces are called "IF".
  • At first time the device is registered with hostname.
  • Registration is done with the "register" button.
  • One interface can be registered at a time.
  • Leave the interface name empty.
  • It's possible to add additional interfaces to the device.
  • Adding additional interfaces can be done with "AddIF" button.
  • For the additional interfaces it's necessary to add interface name.
  • DNS name
  • Each interface will have their own DNS name registered.
  • DNS name is combination of hostname and interface name, combined with hyphen.
  • DNS name＝hostname+"-"+interface name
  • The system automatically adds the hyphen so don't add it yourself.
  • You can use hyphens in hostname and interface names.
    Hyphens can be confused with the hyphen added before interface name so be careful when using it.
  • The names need to be unique following rules below.
    • DNS name must be unique inside the Network Management System.
    • Hostname must be unique inside the Network Management System.
    • Each interface name for one device must be unique.
    • Even if the hostname and interface name meet the requirements it's possible that the DNS name won't, so be wary of this.

  Even if you end up registering additional interface separately on different hostnames for one device, the network management system won't be able to notice this.
  It still works,however, the problem is that this system will also include software license management functionality.
  We need you to report your software licenses for each device (hostname).
  
  If the interfaces are correctly registered under one hostname you will only have to send single report for each device.
  However if you have multiple interfaces that belong to single device registered under different hostnames, you will have to make report for each interface separately.
  This will cause you extra trouble and cause misleading usage reports.
