The “Great East Japan Earthquake” that hit Japan on March 11, 2011, wreaked unprecedented havoc on the eastern part of Japan.
The earthquake had the largest magnitude in recorded history in the areas surrounding Japan, and the tsunami and fire caused devastating disaster. It also triggered a disaster different in nature: the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station caused great anxiety and confronted the nation with the need for a fundamental review of its systems for disaster prevention and energy production.
Harmful rumors arising from the radiation disaster still persists, bothering the people in Fukushima Prefecture even to this day.
The aim of this website is to present the various efforts Osaka University is now expending to solve the problems caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Implemented Projects

Fukushima Soil Survey
This webpage presents the details of the large-scale soil survey conducted immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake in cooperation with many researchers across the nation.

Hamadohri Environmental Radiation School
Every summer, the researchers and students visit Iitate Village and Okuma Town to have a seminar on environmental radiation.

Osaka University Co-creative Radiation Education Programme (CREPE)
This program is aiming to foster human resources capable of overviewing various aspects of natural and social sciences and integrate the advanced "knowledge" of experts in these areas for further advancement, wherein the environmental radiation seminar at Hamadohri (Fukushima Prefecture) plays an important role.
The graduate school version of the Co-Creative Radiation Education Programme (CREPE) started in 2023 as an advanced post-graduate sub-program.

Okuma Town Environmental Information Signage
The students who have participated in the Hamadohri Environmental Radiation School write explanatory texts about radiation to be posted on Okuma Town signage.

The University of Osaka Fukushima Center
"The University of Osaka Fukushima Center" was established in Okuma-machi, Futaba-gun, Fukushima Prefecture, on August 6, 2024 as a new activity base of The University of Osaka.

Hamadohri Science Lab
Hama Lab is a field-based program that leverages the unique conditions of the Hamadori region to conduct natural science research and education centered on radiation. Starting from questions each individual holds, we explore interests and curiosities through scientific inquiry.
